Jeff and I have kayaked and/or rafted the Grand Canyon several times. It is a wonderful experience. Jeff took the reference photo on his last canyon trip. It is a side canyon along the Colorodo River. This painting was the largest one I had painted at the time, and when it was finished I wasn't sure I ever wanted to paint another rock. I have recovered and still enjoy painting rocks in moderation. Lava Canyon was one of the first paintings I got into a Connecticut Watercolor Society so it helped me become a member. It has been in several other juried art shows. It is one of four Grand Canyon paintings I have done so far.
